Suspected Michigan identity thief arrested

A Riverdale man suspected of using a Michigan resident’s identity to purchase cigarette cartons in Senoia was arrested over the weekend.

About 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Officer Jason Scarbrough with the Senoia Police Department pulled over Sorie Barrie, 26, on Hwy. 16 because Barrie had failed to maintain his lane and to properly yield, said Lt. Jason Ercole. After making the stop, Scarbrough realized Barrie had a Be On the Look Out posted on him by the Senoia department.


County, city narcotics units make arrests

Investigators with Coweta County Sheriff’s Office’s Narcotics Unit made a number of arrests, including the arrest of a suspected marijuana dealer and a suspected methamphetamine dealer.

On April 16, Investigator Taylor Helton and other members of the narcotics unit served a search warrant at the home of Ashley Willey on the 1100-block of Highway 85 north of Haralson. According to Lt. Col. Jimmy Yarbrough with the sheriff’s office, inside, authorities found Willey along with suspected methamphetamine and less than an ounce of marijuana. Because authorities also found a number of small plastic baggies and a digital scale, Willey was charged with possession of meth with intent to distribute and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

City park restrooms open

The new public restrooms at Greenville Street Park, First Avenue Park, Ray Park, and Willie Lynch Park are open.

“These are the four parks that get the most use,” said Mike Furbush, director of Newnan’s beautification department, after the initial bid was approved.

Teacher named to state board

Newnan High School teacher Chris Swanson has been appointed to the 10-member board of Georgia’s Teacher Retirement System (TRS).

“I think it will be a neat experience,” he said. “It will expose me to stuff I’m naturally interested in.”

Bus driver calls police for help

A Coweta County School System (CCSS) bus driver needed police help with a disciplinary matter on Tuesday.

Around 8 a.m., pedestrians reported seeing a school bus pulled over on Greison Trail, with three Newnan Police cars nearby and students standing outside the bus.

Short story event Thursday at Caldwell Museum

Short stories by Erskine Caldwell will be shared Thursday at a Trailfest event at the Erskine Caldwell Birthplace and Museum, located on the town square in Moreland.

“An Evening of Masterful Storytelling: Erskine Caldwell, the Short-Story Writer” will be presented free at 7 p.m. If weather permits, the program will take place outside with the “back porch” as the stage.

NHS chemistry teacher runs Boston Marathon

Newnan High School (NHS) chemistry teacher and cross country coach Kris Mossburg completed the 2015 Boston Marathon on Monday afternoon.

In her first outing at the world famous race, Mossburg’s official time was three hours, 50 minutes and three seconds. She was one of more than 30,000 runners who participated in the 119th annual Boston Marathon.

A Newnan man is being charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm after shooting his co-worker at a Kia plant in Troup County on Tuesday afternoon.

Gabriel Raines shot his co-worker, Gary Swanson, According to Chief Tony Bailey with West Point police.


County hires interim fire chief, eliminates deputy chief position

After an extensive and at times contentious debate Tuesday night, the Coweta County Board of Commissioners voted 3 to 2 to hire a new interim chief for the Coweta County Fire Department and to eliminate the position of deputy chief.

Fire Chief Johnny Teeters previously announced his retirement effective May 1. A retirement dinner for Teeters was held Monday.

Driver of Hwy. 27 accident in critical condition

\The man who was badly injured in a single-vehicle accident Tuesday is now in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Samuel Lamar Blair, 73, was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital Tuesday after he drove off Highway 27 Alternate, ran into a ditch and collided with a tree head-on, said Sgt. First Class Mike Adcock with the Georgia State Patrol. Blair was traveling northbound near Bexley Road Spur when he traveled across the southbound lane of traffic and drove off the left side of the road. Authorities do not suspect alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident.

Sixteen additional lots approved at Lake Redwine

A variance allowing 16 additional lots to be developed in the Lake Redwine community without the construction of an additional entrance to Lake Redwine was approved at Tuesday’s meeting of the Coweta County Board of Commissioners.

Several residents of Lake Redwine and Lake Coweta spoke against the request, expressing concerns about increased traffic on Redwine Plantation Drive and Happy Valley Circle.

Woman arrested for offering ‘company’ to truck drivers

A registered sex offender was arrested early Tuesday after truck drivers complained about her harassing them at the Pilot travel center on South Highway 29.

About 3:15 a.m., deputies with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Pilot travel center near the I-85 Moreland exit to check on a woman who was allegedly approaching trucks, hopping up in the cabs and asking drivers if they wanted some company, said Lt. Col. Jimmy Yarbrough with the sheriff’s office.

Jimmy Bass, director of the Coweta Public Library System, told the CPLS board on Tuesday the system is ranked third in the percentage of residents who have a library card.

Kia Motors shooter ID’d as Newnan resident

The Newnan man suspected of shooting a co-worker at the Kia Motors manufacturing plant in West Point Tuesday has been identified by authorities.

Gabriel Raines, 38, has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, West Point Police Chief Tony Bailey told the LaGrange Daily News. The case is still under investigation, and authorities at the West Point Police Department were unable to release any further information about the incident or investigation to The Newnan Times-Herald on Wednesday.

Man arrested for threatening his ex with gun

A man was arrested Monday after he allegedly threatened to kill a woman with a gun and then chased her to the parking lot of the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.

About 8:15 p.m., officers with the Newnan Police Department responded to the sheriff’s office on Greison Trail to meet with a woman who said she had been threatened by the father of her child. According to Officer Scott Carl, the victim said she was visiting her former boyfriend, D’Breon Markel Vinson, 21, so her 3-year-old son could visit when the two got into an argument.


Interim fire chief named; deputy's job axed

An outside interim chief for the Coweta County Fire Department was hired and the number two position in the department eliminated during a contentious Coweta County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday.

Shortly after the meeting ended, second-in-command Deputy Chief Todd Moore was placed on administrative leave.

‘Walking Dead’ filming resumes May 4

Filming of Season 6 of “The Walking Dead” will start soon, and Location Manager Michael Riley appeared before the Senoia City Council and the Coweta County Board of Commissioners this week to discuss the upcoming filming.

“Sorry I’m late. I’m chasing zombies. Actually, I’m chasing people’s lawnmowers. They are my nemesis here in Coweta County,” said Riley as he spoke to the county commissioners on Tuesday.

Raise the Praise coming Saturday

Raise the Praise, Coweta!, a Christian music festival, will be held Saturday at the Coweta County Fairgrounds.

The Newnan Kiwanis Club is sponsoring the event. Sponsors are paying $250 for local Christian bands to perform. Groups will be singing at Walker Horne Amphitheater from noon-7 p.m.

Suspected gang member, shooting victim pleads guilty

This week, a local gang member pleaded guilty to an armed robbery he committed only a few months after he was the victim of a violent assault in March 2014.

On Tuesday, Vantorious Krishad Dixon, 19, pleaded guilty in a negotiated plea deal to one count of armed robbery and one count of violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, according to Assistant District Attorney Herb Cranford, who prosecuted the case. After hearing the guilty plea, Superior Court Judge John Simpson sentenced Dixon to 20 years with 15 to serve in prison.

Relay for Life gets boost from local schools

The Coweta County School System (CCSS) has been a longtime supporter of Coweta County’s Relay for Life (RFL), and its schools are some of the nonprofit’s largest supporters.

Currently, all participating in Coweta’s RFL event have raised $80,000. Schools in CCSS have raised $16,000 of that amount, just through their individual fundraisers.
