Fayetteville man charged with slaying uncle

A 17-year-old man was charged with murder Monday after his uncle passed away in the hospital.

Around 8:15 p.m., officers with the Fayetteville Police Department responded to the 300-block of Sylvan Loop in reference to a domestic dispute, according to Lt. Mike Whitlow with the police department. There, they found David John Quincy III with multiple stab wounds.


Dept. head charged in domestic violence incident

A Coweta County government department head is on voluntary leave after being arrested in Senoia last week following a domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend.

On March 16, around 8:25 p.m., Officer Chance Leveillard with the Senoia Police Department responded to the 100-block of Baggarly Way in reference to a family violence call. According to Leveillard’s report, he met with the victim, who was sitting in her car holding her 13-month-old son. The victim told Leveillard she called 911 after she got into a fight with her ex-boyfriend, Tray Baggarly, 49.

East Coweta High School senior Yehzong Zhu, Coweta’s STAR Student, has been named the region STAR Student and is now a contender for Georgia’s 2014 State STAR student award.

On hand at the 3B STAR Student and Teacher banquet in Griffin where Zhu received the region STAR student award were her parents, younger brother, and STAR Teacher Paula Corley, the REACH teacher at White Oak Elementary School.

Suspected scrap metal thief caught

A man suspected of stealing multiple items in the Moreland and Grantville areas of south Coweta County last year was arrested by authorities on Monday.

Last year, when the Pecan Grove mobile home park on South Highway 29 in Moreland began shutting down, the homes were stripped of scrap metal, which was piled into multiple trailers on the property, said Lt. Col. Jimmy Yarbrough with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.

Dog dies in house fire

A family dog was the victim of a house fire that damaged the kitchen of a Coweta County home Monday.

Around 5:34 p.m., Coweta County Fire Department units were dispatched to a single- story structure fire on the 800-block of Summer McKoy Road, said Assistant Fire Chief Mitch Coggin. Units arrived and found the home’s kitchen on fire. A bystander who entered the home through the garage with a garden hose to fight the fire was also on the scene.

Child molestation trial begins

The trial of a man indicted on four counts of child molestation and eight counts of sexual exploitation of children began Tuesday and will continue today.

The defendant, Willie Autrey Gray, was arrested in Coweta County on Aug. 1, 2012. In 2011, Gray was accused of molesting two juvenile girls on separate occasions and later showing child pornography to one of them to promote another act of molestation. When the molestation was reported to authorities a year later, investigators obtained a warrant to search Gray’s computers, and on his personal laptop computer, forensics analysts found a number of child pornography videos.

A man suffering from multiple gunshot injuries was airlifted to an Atlanta hospital following a shooting in Newnan on Tuesday.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1 p.m. at 21 Lovelace Street, in an area near Boone Drive and West Washington Street. The victim was in the street when three suspects shot at him and hit him more than once, said Newnan Police Chief Douglas “Buster” Meadows. The victim was flown by helicopter ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center and was conscious and talking at the scene, according to public safety radio traffic.

Two men were victims of a deadly shooting Tuesday evening in Newnan.

Around 6:45 p.m., authorities with both the Newnan Police Department and the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office responded to Hill Street in reference to shots fired and someone being injured, said Newnan Police Chief Douglas “Buster” Meadows. When officers arrived, they found one victim lying in the street near the intersection of Hatcher Street, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.


ID fraud suspect caught in Florida

A man suspected of being involved in a scheme to steal the identities of more than a hundred local residents is now residing in the Coweta County Jail.

The suspect, Anthony Delano Henry, 31, has been charged with two counts of identity fraud by Investigator Chad McDonald with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office and a third count of identity fraud by Lt. Jason Ercole with the Senoia Police Department. Henry was arrested in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Jan. 16 and was extradited to Coweta County this week, McDonald said.

Update: Shooting suspect Kamikie Nechez "Chez" Wilkins has been taken into custody at Atlanta Medical Center. 

The Newnan Police Department reported the news at 3 p.m. Wilkins is a suspect in the Tuesday evening shooting deaths of Gregory Marquel Williams, 31, and Darian Vershon Person.

A prayer vigil is being held tonight — following two shootings in Newnan yesterday which left one man injured and two dead. Tamarkus T. Cook, pastor at St. Smyrna Baptist Church, said the prayer vigil will be held at St. Smyrna at 7 p.m. St. Smyrna is located at 68 Heery Rd. The purpose of the service is “urging the community to commit to peace in light of the shooting yesterday,” Cook said. “I'm bringing local clergy together to have a joint service tonight.” Police are looking for Kamikie Nechez “Chez” Wilkins, 23, who is sought in the shooting deaths of Gregory Marquel Williams, 31, and Darian Vershon Darelle Person, 23, on Hill Street yesterday around 6:45 p.m. Another shooting took place about 1 p.m. Tuesday on Lovelace Street. Jerome Grier, Jr., 28, is in critical condition at an Atlanta hospital.

A suspect in the Tuesday evening shooting death of two men on Hill Street in Newnan was taken into custody Wednesday at Atlanta Medical Center.

Police are investigating a separate shooting that occurred on Tuesday but have no suspects. A person of interest in the shooting of a man on Lovelace Street turned out to be in prison, said Newnan Police Chief Douglas “Buster” Meadows.

Parkway North changing to Celebrate Life Parkway

Parkway North off Bullsboro Drive in Newnan will be changing to Celebrate Life Parkway following a vote of Newnan City Council on Tuesday.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Southeastern Medical Center initially requested the name change at the council’s March 14 meeting, during which the request was forwarded to city staff to research and bring it back before the council at a later date.

School system names new administrators

The Coweta County Board of Education has appointed Melissa Casablanca and Jason Olvey to two administrative positions.

Casablanca was named the school system’s director of special education. She is replacing current director Gina Murray who is retiring at the end of the month.

Resident plans to sue Newnan for damage to roof

Newnan resident Anthony Johnson plans to sue the city for damage to his roof during February’s ice storm.

At the Newnan City Council meeting Tuesday, Johnson, who lives at 85 Cole St., said a limb from a tree in the city’s right-of-way fell on his house on Feb. 12, damaging his roof. The estimate he gave at the meeting for the repairs was $968.86.

The names of all nine candidates were listed along with an “undecided” choice.

The nine Republican candidates running for state school superintendent squared off for a debate Tuesday at the Newnan Carnegie Library.

The candidates for the forum sponsored by the Coweta Republican Party included Mary Kay Bacallao, Kira Willis, Sharyl Dawes, Mike Buck, Ashley Bell, Allen Fort, Nancy Jester, Fitz Johnson and Richard Woods.

Newnan woman arrested for child molestation

A Newnan woman was arrested Friday on charges of child molestation following an investigation by detectives with the Newnan Police Department and the New York Police Department in Queens.

On March 20, Sgt. Beatrice Bugg with the Newnan Police Department received a call from Lisa Johns, supervisor with the Coweta County Department of Family and Children Services, about possible child molestation allegations in Newnan. According to Bugg, the complaint was issued by the New York Police Department and the alleged incident occurred on the 100-block of Brisbane Court in Newnan.

The trial of a man indicted on four counts of child molestation and eight counts of sexual exploitation of children continued Wednesday in Coweta Superior Court and will resume today at 9:30 a.m.

Willie Autrey Gray was arrested Aug. 1, 2012, on charges of child molestation following an investigation by deputies and investigators with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. Gray was accused by two separate juvenile girls, both relatives of Gray, of touching them inappropriately. One of the victims also accused Gray of making her touch his privates and showing her “ugly videos” on a laptop computer — videos of pornography that included children.

Marquel Anderson had wanted to be a rapper since he was in elementary school. He’d become well-known in Coweta County. His first cousin, Darian Person, liked to rap, too, but “he was a quiet person, a homebody, low key,” said family friend Holly Pender.

Both men lost their lives Tuesday on Hill Street. The suspect in the shootings, Kamikie “Chez” Wilkins, was also wounded.
